Fall Proceeds Apace

Updated: Oct 1, 2023

Wistful seeing the last of summer's hummingbirds on the tattered remains of wild monarda in our rain garden (Monarda fistulosa, also called wild bergamot). You can see the female (or possibly immature male) broadtailed hummingbird just above the center of the photo, sipping from the monarda and fattening up for its epic journey. Within a few days this hummingbird will begin its long haul to southern Mexico and Guatemala for the winter. (Update: a day later, this hummingbird was gone.)
